A spare is different from a lost key

Situation

Spare Key (Duplication)

Lost Key (Origination)

What it means

You have a working key and want an extra one.

All keys are lost or missing, and no working key is available.

What we need

One working key to duplicate and proof of ownership.

Proof of ownership and vehicle info to create and program a new key.

Process

Cut and program a new key to match the existing one.

Key is cut to code and programmed to your vehicle’s immobilizer.

Time

Typically faster.

Usually more time involved.

Best for

Having a backup for convenience and peace of mind.

Getting back on the road after losing your only key.

Cutting and programming are different steps

Physical key cutting

  • Shapes the key blade to match the lock.
  • Uses key code or original key as reference.
  • Ensures the key turns and operates the lock smoothly.
  • Does not connect to the vehicle’s electronic system.

Cutting creates the physical key.

The key must be cut to match your door and ignition locks so it can turn properly. This step is mechanical and doesn’t involve your vehicle’s computer.

Programming connects the key to the vehicle.

Programming tells your vehicle’s computer to recognize the key’s chip or remote. Without programming, the engine may not start and remote functions may not work.

Start with your
vehicle details

Can you make a key if I lost every copy?

Yes. We can originate and program a key from scratch, even if all copies are lost.

  • Make
  • Model
